Jüdische und israelische Organisationen fordern das Berliner “Pop Kultur”- Festival dazu auf, die israelische Botschaft außen vor zu lassen

“Wir -die Jüdische Stimme für gerechten Frieden in Nahost und Jewish Antifa Berlin – rufen das Berliner Festival “Pop-Kultur” dazu auf, seine Partnerschaft mit der israelischen Botschaft zu beenden”– so beginnt ein gemeinsames Statement zweier jüdischer Organisationen aus Deutschland. Den genannten Gruppen schlossen sich mittlerweile weitere jüdische Gruppen aus verschiedenen Teilen der Welt an, die ihr Gewicht hinsichtlich der Aktionen der israelischen Botschaften und ihrer Partner im Ausland geltend machen wollen.
Im Laufe der letzten Wochen zogen die Künstlerin Emel Mathlouthi (Tunesien) und die Bands Mazzaj (Syrien), Islam Chipsy (Ägypten), Hello Psychaleppo (Syrien) und Iklan featuring Law Holt (UK) ihre Beteiligung am Berliner Pop-Kultur Festival zurück; am Sonntag schloss sich ihnen Annie Goh (UK) an, die ebenfalls absagte. Diese sechs Musikgruppen entschieden sich alle für den aktiven Rückzug aus einem der größten Musikfestivals Deutschlands. Ihr Grund: die Partnerschaft desselben mit der israelischen Botschaft.
In der Flut all dieser Absagen schlossen sich weitere jüdische Gruppen dem Aufruf der BDS-Bewegung an, jegliche Verbindungen des Festivals zu der Botschaft zu beenden. Dies sind: BOYCOTT! Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from Within (Israel), das Netzwerk Jewish Voice for Peace (USA), die Union Juive Française pour la Paix (Frankreich), Jews for a Free Palestine (Südafrika, Coloradans for Justice in Palestine (USA)sowie Free Speech on Israel aus Großbritannien.
“Israel benutzt Kultur offen und aktiv als Teil seiner staatlichen Branding-Strategie. Das israelische Außenministerium bestätigt ganz offen, dass es jährlich Hunderte von Millionen Dollar ausgibt, um das Image Israels zu verbessern” heißt es in der Erklärung von Boycott from within. “Brand Israel” wurde vor einem Jahrzehnt konzipiert, um das auf der ganzen Welt beschädigte Image Israels nach Jahrzehnten der Besatzung, der Apartheid und der militärischen Angriffe aufzupolieren. Ziel dieser Strategie ist es, den Fokus der Konversation um Israel von seinem Militärregime und seinen Verbrechen auf seine angenommenen kulturellen oder Hightech-Errungenschaften oder, welch Ironie, auf seine sogenannte “Demokratie und seine Achtung der Menschenrechte” zu verlagern.
Die Organisationen haben auch die moralische Verpflichtung zum Schutz der Menschenrechte hervorgehoben, oder, um es mit den Worten von South African Jews for a Free Palestine zu sagen: “Wir glauben fest an das jüdische Konzept von Tikkun Olam – Verbesserung der Welt – das soziales Handeln und das Streben nach sozialer Gerechtigkeit verkörpert… “Wir sind entsetzt über die Herabwürdigung von Menschenrechtsverteidiger*innen durch deutsche Medien, Politiker*innen und die Festival-Leitung”, warnen sie. ” Es ist nicht antisemitisch, für Kriegsverbrechen Rechenschaft einzufordern.”
Die Kritik der Organisationen an der Berichterstattung deutscher Medien verwies auf die Gefahren der Entmenschlichung und Falschdarstellung der Stimmen von Andersdenkenden. “Manche der Künstler*innen, die abgesagt haben, wurden drangsaliert und mehrmals online von Unterstützer*innen der israelischen Regierung bedroht”, warnten die zwei deutschen Gruppen. “ Wir sind zutiefst bestürzt darüber, wie diese Absagen seitens der Organisation des Festivals und der deutschen Medien aufgenommen worden sind. Viele deutschsprachige Nachrichtenkanäle, das Festivalmanagement und selbst Berlins Kultursenator, Klaus Lederer, haben angedeutet, dass die Absage auf den arabischen Hintergrund der Künstler*innen zurückzuführen sei… “Wir bedauern, dass mediale Sprachrohre und Politiker*innen es erneut vorziehen, die Problematik der israelischen Besatzung Palästinas zu ignorieren und stattdessen den Künstler*innen die Schuld zuzuschieben oder ihren Protest als antisemitismusbezogen zu brandmarken.”
Granate Sosnoff, Kommunikationsstrategin der US-amerikanischen Organisation Jewish Voice for Peace, betonte die Rolle der Künstler*innen, und sagte: “Künstler*innen spielen eine wichtige Rolle, genauso wie es Künstler*innen während des Kampfes für das Ende der südafrikanischen Apartheid getan haben … die Apartheidsregierung stützt sich auf die Teilnahme von Künstler*innen, um die Realität normal erscheinen zu lassen. Wenn Künstler*innen auf einer Veranstaltung in Berlin auftreten, die von der israelischen Botschaft mitfinanziert ist, wird eine rote Linie überschritten und geht in die Befürwortung von Apartheid über, unabhängig davon, ob die Künstler*innen dieses mitteilen oder nicht. Wir zollen allen Künstler*innen Respekt, die ihre Teilnahme am Pop-Kultur Festival zurückgenommen haben.”

Jewish and Israeli organisations ask Pop Kultur Berlin to drop Israeli embassy
“We, Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East and Jewish Antifa Berlin, call upon the “Pop-Kultur” festival to cancel its partnership with the Israeli embassy,” begins a joint statement by two Jewish organizations in Germany. The groups are joined by Jewish organisations from around the globe, weighing in on the issue of Israeli embassies’ operations and their partners abroad.
Last week, Emel Mathlouthi (Tunisia), and bands Mazzaj (Syria), Islam Chipsy (Egypt), Hello Psychaleppo (Syria), and Iklan featuring Law Holt (UK) all cancelled their participation in the Pop-Kultur Berlin festival, joined by Annie Goh (UK) on Sunday. The six acts pulled out of one of Germany’s biggest music festival because of its partnership with the Israeli embassy.
In the flurry of cancellations, Jewish groups, including Israel based BOYCOTT! Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from Within, American based network Jewish Voice for Peace France based Union Juive Française pour la Paix, South African Jews for a Free Palestine, Coloradans for Justice in Palestine, and UK based Free Speech on Israel are adding their voice to the BDS movement’s call to the festival to cut ties with the embassy.
“Israel openly and actively uses culture as part of its state branding campaign strategy. The Israeli foreign ministry openly acknowledges spending hundreds of millions of dollars annually to improve Israel’s image,” the Boycott from Within statement explains. “Brand Israel” was conceptualised a decade ago, in order to change Israel’s deteriorating image around the world, which has been badly damaged after decades of occupation, apartheid and military attacks. The strategy’s aim is to actively shift the focus of the conversation around Israel from its military regime and its crimes, to its perceived cultural or hi-tec achievements, or- ironically- its so-called “Democracy and respect of human rights”.
The organisations also highlighted the moral obligation towards the protection of human rights, with South African Jews for a Free Palestine saying “We strongly believe in the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam, “Repairing the World” which embodies social action and the pursuit of social justice… We’re horrified at the German media, politicians, and festival’s vilification of human rights defenders,” they warn. “There is nothing antisemitic about demanding accountability for war crimes.”
The organisations’ criticism of German media’s handling of the story pointed out the dangers of dehumanising and misrepresenting dissenting voices, “cancelling artists have been harassed, and received numerous threats online from supporters of the Israeli government,” the two German groups cautioned. “We are very disturbed from the way those cancellations were received by the festival’s management and the German media. Many German-speaking media outlets, the festivals management and even Berlin´s culture senator, Klaus Lederer, has hinted that the cancellation is due to the artists’ Arab background… once again media outlets and politicians chosen to ignore the problem of the Israeli occupation of Palestine and instead blame the artists or label their protest as connected to antisemitism.”
Granate Sosnoff, Communications Strategist for Jewish Voice for Peace (USA), brought the focus back on the artists’ role, saying that “artists have an important role to play, just as artists did during the fight to end South African apartheid… [the] apartheid government relies on artist participation to make all appear normal. For artists to play in an event in Berlin sponsored by the Israeli embassy it crosses a line into endorsement of apartheid, whether artists share that sentiment or not. We applaud the artists who have withdrawn from Pop-Kultur festival.”
