UPDATE: Weitere KünstlerInnen ziehen ihre Teilnahme am Pop-Kultur Festival 2017 zurück!
(English follows German) Für das Kultur- und Musikfestival, “Pop-Kultur”, das Ende August in Berlin stattfindet, stellt die Kulturabteilung der israelischen Botschaft dem Festival Pop Kultur 2017 500 Euro als Reisekostenzuschuss für Künstler*innen zur Verfügung.
Dies hat bereits dazu geführt, dass die Mazzaj Rap Band-Syria, Hello Psychaleppo (Syrien) und Islam Chipsy (Ägypten) ihre Teilnahme zurückgezogen haben. Auch Emel Mathlouthi wird nicht teilnehmen
AktivistInnen der Palästina-Solidarität in Berlin betrachten die Beteiligung Israels bei dieser Veranstaltung als eindeutigen Versuch, sich als hippen, multikulturellen und fortschrittlichen Staat darzustellen, um seine Besatzung Palästinas und seine Menschenrechtsverletzungen zu übertünchen.
Besonders beunruhigend ist die Tatsache, dass das “Pop-Kultur” -Festival darauf abzuzielen scheint, viele KünstlerInnen aus dem Nahen Osten und PoC-KünstlerInnen einzuladen, darunter Queer- und feministische AktivistInnen. Die Beteiligung der israelischen Botschaft wirft daher einen zynischen Schatten auf diese KünstlerInnen und AktivistInnen, zumal Israels Verletzungen der Rechte der PalästinenserInnen hinlänglich bekannt sind.
Die israelische Botschaft in Deutschland tritt bei vielen fortschrittlichen Kulturveranstaltungen sowie vielen LGBTQ *-Veranstaltungen als Partner auf, und benutzt diese Veranstaltungen, um Israels Image aufzupolieren – ungeachtet der Proteste von lokalen LGBTQ *-Gruppen und AktivistInnen, die in der Vergangenheit zu Angriffen von pro-Israel-AktivistInnen ebenso wie vom deutschen Staat führten.
Palästina-SolidaritätsaktivistInnen und -gruppen in Berlin sowie im In- und Ausland haben sich an weitere KünstlerInnen des Festivals gewandt und sie dazu aufgerufen, ihre Teilnahme, die zweifellos vom israelischen Außenministerium für seine politischen Ziele instrumentalisiert werden wird, zu überdenken.
Several artists have cancelled their performances at Pop-Kultur 2017
The Culture Department of the Israeli Embassy will provide the Festival Pop Culture 2017 with 500 Euro for the cultural and music festival, “Pop Culture”, which will take place in Berlin at the end of August.
This has already led to the cancelation of the Syrian hip-hop band Mazzaj Rap Band-Syria, the Egyptian band Islam Chipsy and Hello Psychaleppo (Syria). Emel Mathlouthi also cancelled her participation.
Palestine solidarity activists in Berlin see Israel´s partnership in the event as a clear attempt to brand itself as a hip, multicultural and progressive state, in order to whitewash its occupation of Palestine and human rights abuses.
Mostly disturbing is the fact that the “Pop-Kultur” festival seems to be aiming at inviting many middle-eastern and PoC artists, among them queer and feminist activists, and the participation of the Israeli embassy casts a cynical shadow on their participation, as Israel´s record of abuse of Palestinians is well known.
The Israeli embassy in Germany is co-organising many progressive cultural events as well as many LGBTQ* related events, using those events as a vehicle for state rebranding, despite protests from local LGBTQ* communities and activists, protests which have been encountered with violence from pro-Israeli activists as well as the German state in the past.
Palestine solidarity activists and groups in Berlin and abroad have approached other artists involved in the festival and called on them to reconsider their participation, which will doubtlessly be instrumentalized by the Israeli foreign ministry for their political aims.
